Our faculty research achievements won the IEEE TPEL 2022 Excellent Paper Award


The IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) has announced the winners of its flagship IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (TPEL) Prize Paper Award for 2022. The paper " Integrated Design for Lifetime Extension and ESR Monitoring of Hybrid DC Link in Solid-State Transformer From the Perspective of High-Frequency Ripple Current " by Wei Jinxiao, PhD student in the Department of Power Electronics and Power Transmission, School of Electrical Engineering, Chongqing University, Associate Professor Feng Hao (corresponding author) and Professor Ran Li won the TPEL Second Place 2022 Prize Paper Award. This paper is supported by the State Key Research and Development Program "Multi-Physical Field Comprehensive Analysis and Reliability Evaluation Method of Large Capacity Power Electronic Equipment (2018YFB0905803)" and the National Natural Science Foundation of China "Electric-Thermal, electric-Magnetic Coupling Mechanism and Homogeneous Resolution Coupling Method of Medium Voltage Overcharge System Isolation Barrier (52107179)".

The research work of this thesis focuses on condition monitoring and life extension of solid-state transformer hybrid DC link in medium voltage AC-DC distribution network application scenarios. Solid state transformer is the core equipment of the next generation distribution network, the reliability of its DC link constitutes the key technical restriction to replace the traditional transformer. Compared with the low frequency ripple concerned by the conventional thinking, the influence of middle and high frequency current injection in the high-frequency two-stage (multi-stage) multi-port equipment is increasingly prominent. Therefore, a comprehensive solution of condition monitoring and life extension is proposed from the perspective of high frequency ripple current. This method mines the sensitivity of the high frequency ripple current to the health parameters, monitors the aging process of the capacitor in real time, and realizes the spontaneous current equalization between different capacitor groups at the DC port. Thus, it provides an accurate evaluation of the operating state of the system, and effectively prolonging the service life of the hybrid DC link. The results of this paper have universal significance for multistage power electronic equipment including solid state transformer, and help to promote the substantial change of capacitor design ideas in power electronic equipment. In the follow-up work, based on the ideas of this paper, the team further iteratively developed a prototype with higher efficiency and power density.

The important award recognizes outstanding papers in terms of originality, quality of writing and potential application value. The journal's 2022 Paper of the Year Award is determined by the voting of well-known power electronics experts at home and abroad and the review committee. Five First Place Prize papers, nine Second Place Prize papers and two Prize letters are produced from 1,292 papers officially published throughout the year.
